InstaReview: Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

"I am the only storm that matters now, and there is no shelter from what I bring."

Black Sun is the first installment in the Between Earth and Sky series by Rebecca Roanhorse, drawing inspiration from pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies like the Aztecs and the Mayans. We follow the story through four character perspectives, back and forth in time, as celestial prophecy collides with political intrigue, with a dash of romance and seafaring adventure to boot. Roanhorse creates a world less constrained by the boundaries and binaries of our present society, where people can present in different ways that don't fit neat labels or boxes but don't need to, while also delivering a pageturner that will keep you up into the wee hours. We really enjoyed this new setting for high fantasy, and are excited to dig into the next installment - which actually just dropped a few months ago! This spooky season, why not delve into the rise of the Crow God?
