"Sometimes the most important thing an addict can give up is a belief about himself."
Love Marriage by Monica Ali follows Yasmin, a young doctor grappling with familial, romantic and sexual love. The novel explores many of Yasmin’s roles including fiancé to the son of a feminist icon, daughter to Indian immigrant parents (the eponymous love marriage), sister to a black sheep brother, and mystery to herself.
We enjoyed the uniqueness of the plot, though it features numerous subplots that at times read more like a TV show. We are here for the juiciness of the many lies and family secrets, and the interesting social commentary on religion, race, and sex. However, at the end of it all we were a bit underwhelmed by the resolution of the key relationships.
