InstaReview: Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

"To know the ocean, I have always felt, is to recognize the teeth it keeps half hidden."

Our Wives Under the Sea is the story of a woman who has recently returned from a covert military mission and is struggling to readjust to life on land. At times bone chilling and at times terribly mundane, this short novel is a leisurely dip into cosmic horror. The narrative also centers on grief and love in deteriorating relationships - whether familial, platonic, or romantic in nature. While this slow-burn Lovecraftian-style story may not be for everyone, we highly recommend for fans of Carmen Maria Machado, Jeff Vandermeer, and Samanta Schweblin.
