InstaReview: The Mountains Sing by Nguyen Phan Que Mai

"If our stories survive, we will not die, even when our bodies are no longer here on this Earth."

We love an epic multigenerational story! The Mountains Sing tells the story of the Tran family throughout the turbulence of 20th century Viet Nam, primarily through matriarch Dieu Lan and her granddaughter Huong. The story adeptly weaves back and forth between multiple time periods and characters and touches on themes such as intergenerational trauma, the resilience of women, and the human damage wrought by war. We enjoyed the poetic prose but would have liked some deeper character development, so it's 4 stars from us!
